“I look forward to this time of year, now the snow falls white, so I know Christmas is near.”
These are the opening words of the much-loved classic Peter's Christmas. This year, this cherished story will serve as the foundation for UngKlang’s Christmas concerts. With newly composed music by the ensemble’s own singer and composition student, Martha C. Bach Gislinge, the concerts will premiere passages from Peter's Christmas, where classical and modern elements merge into a seamless whole—a blend that reflects UngKlang’s artistic approach.
Peter's Christmas consists of three newly written movements for choir, cello, and clarinet, offering a fresh musical interpretation of the traditional Christmas tale. These movements explore space, transitioning from floating, fluid sounds to dynamic motifs that allow the text to take center stage. This Christmas story, never before interpreted musically, comes to life through nine individual female voices, alongside the clarinet’s lyrical tone and the cello’s warm strings, creating a stunning musical landscape. "The music, inspired by Nordic tones, grows from nothing and fills the room. We aim to utilize the entire acoustic space, and I hope the music will open up a new understanding of the story, perhaps evoking unexpected emotions," says Martha Bach Gislinge.
In addition to the new compositions, the concert will feature Christmas favorites such as Det kimer nu til julefest, På loftet sidder nissen med sin julegrød, and many more. Much of the remaining repertoire is arranged by UngKlang’s own singers and other talented young arrangers. Cellist Laura Rosende Gehl and clarinetist Louise Bouquin will also join UngKlang on stage.
The concert will last approximately 60 minutes without intermission.
About UngKlang:
UngKlang has performed sold-out Christmas concerts across Denmark since 2021, selling over 1,200 tickets nationwide last year. The ensemble’s singers, aged 24-25, perform without a conductor and share a background as members of the DR Girls' Choir. With their unique style, UngKlang has modernized the choral genre while staying true to their classical training. They are unafraid to engage in contexts where choirs are not typically seen, drawing a younger audience to their performances and making the art form more relevant to a wider audience. UngKlang recently gained international recognition by winning several gold medals at the 2024 World Choir Games in Auckland, New Zealand.
