THIS IS AYJO is the grand finale project of the year, where AYJO combines brand-new compositions with well-known pieces from previous projects into a unique repertoire. This concert showcases the ensemble’s versatility and its ability to constantly evolve musically.
The repertoire consists of original works composed by the musicians themselves, along with carefully selected pieces from earlier projects – offering the audience a unique insight into AYJO’s musical journey.
Each musician has had the freedom to either compose a new piece or select one from previous projects, adding a personal and authentic touch to the concert. The ensemble’s technical skill and artistic maturity create a sound experience that is both moving and inspiring.
This special concert not only marks the end of AYJO’s 2024/25 season – it is also the final performance with this year’s unique lineup, as all orchestra positions are opened annually through an OPEN CALL.
Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra
Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra (AYJO) is North Jutland’s newly founded youth big band, established in 2021 by Anton Langdahl. Since then, the orchestra has served as an elite youth big band and talent development hub for young musicians across North Jutland.
The orchestra mainly consists of young musicians from various music education programs in and around Aalborg, creating a space where different music communities, ages, and genders come together.
The project offers young musicians a unique opportunity to engage with big band music at a high level. With 18 public concerts annually across 5 projects, performed at various after-schools, folk high schools, music schools, and venues, the orchestra reaches a predominantly young audience, playing an important role in nurturing the national music scene.
Organizationally, the orchestra operates under JAZZ9TUS and is led and administered by AYJO’s Youth Secretariat – a group of young people working collectively on the orchestra's activities.
Chief conductor Anton Langdahl conducts the orchestra for half the season, while the other half is led by guest conductors. AYJO is closely connected to the Royal Academy of Music (Aarhus/Aalborg) and MGK NORD. Each year, the orchestra's 19 positions are offered through an open call and filled through auditions for young musicians aged 18–25.
Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra’s activities are supported by Spar Nord Foundation, the North Denmark Region, the Danish Arts Foundation, the William Demant Foundation, the Beckett Foundation, and Aalborg Municipality.
