AALBORG YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA: COLLEGE SONGS FOR BIGBAND 2026

Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra returns with "High School Songs for Big Band", where songs from the High School Songbook are interpreted in arrangements for big band with inspiration from the Nordic jazz scene.

The audience can experience well-known melodies unfolded with winds, improvisations and new harmonies, where common songs and high school tradition meet the sound of modern jazz and big band music. The music moves between the intimate and the grandiose and gives new life to songs that many know from group singing and the Danish singing tradition. The project is based on melodies that have been part of the Danish song tradition for generations, but places them in a new musical context. The result is concert experiences where recognizable songs meet new arrangements and a modern orchestral expression. "High school songs for Bigband" is a further development of a previous AYJO project and returns in a new edition with new musicians and new interpretations. At this concert you can experience the Danish Youth Jazz Orchestra under the title "Nordic Impressions". This time the orchestra focuses on the Nordic big band tradition and the special sound that has developed over decades in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the rest of the Nordic region. The program includes music by, among others, Lars Møller, Geir Lysne, Jakob Buchanan, Jon Balke and Bengt Hallberg – composers and arrangers who, in their own way, have helped shape a Scandinavian sound in modern jazz and big band music. The Nordic big band tradition draws both on the American jazz heritage and on a special Scandinavian tonal language. Here the powerful and rhythmic meets the open, melodic and sonorous - from Swedish jazz tradition to newer Danish and Norwegian big band music. The concert
