Ben LaMar Gay creates a collage of folklore and folk styles from around the world such as jazz, funk, blues, techno through his time spent in Chicago, of different backgrounds and time spent in Brazil.

As one of the key proponents of the Chicago contemporary jazz, improv and experimental scenes, Ben's music crosses into shared space as the Afro Quantum Futurism scene surrounding Moor Mother, also Angel Bat Dawid and the Brotherhood, close collaborative kinships with Angel, Jamie Branch, Makaya McCraven, Nicole Mitchell, Mike Reed, Jeff Parker, Joshua Abrams & Bitchin Bajas and the list goes on...

Ben describes his work as a process of “dealing with folklore and history,” but also of forging ahead. “When you’re trying to find something, it is a search,” he said in an interview. “You’re thinking about the future already.”
