Get ready for an explosive music experience as Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra, led by Uffe Markussen who plays big band jazz.

In spring 2023, you can experience the youth big band Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra together with the seasoned tenor saxophonist Uffe Markussen. In tribute to some of the greatest composers in the big band world, AYJO will perform music by, among others, Thad Jones, Lennie Niehaus, Chick Corea, Bob Mintzer, and many more.

Uffe Markussen is one of the most prolific big band musicians in Denmark. He currently plays in the North Jutlandic big band Nordkraft Big Band, so it was only natural for him to meet and collaborate with Aalborg Youth Jazz Orchestra. He grew up in Frederikshavn and has a special connection to North Jutland. As a young man, he moved to Copenhagen, where his music career really took off. He played with Marilyn Mazur in Zirenes, Six Winds (Alex Riel), and later MM4. He lived in Madrid for a period (1988-90), where he played with the group Solar (Joaquin Chacon and Guillermo McGill, among others). He also made several TV programs with Chuck Israels.

In 1990, Uffe returned to Copenhagen and took a position in the Radio Big Band, where he was employed for 22 years. He also had several groups on the side, including ones with Ben Besiakov, Henrik Bolberg, a European group with Joaquin Chacon, and Billy Hart.
